Social Games make actual Money.
While Social Games are in some ways a subset of the wider world of Social Media it’s important to remember that there is a fundamental difference between the two that goes beyond just a "form follows function" argument.
Social Media is a means to an end while Social Games are an end to themselves.
That’s not to say you can’t use a Social Game as a media tool. In fact I believe that the ability of a game to send a marketing message is one the great missed opportunities of the current media generation. But that’s another post…
If you’re looking to have something that gives you a quantifiable return on investment then Social Games exist in a different category because the money generated comes directly from your application.
Whether you’re choosing direct sales, micropayments, or even click through advertising, it’s much easier to figure exactly how many dollars you’re getting for your doughnuts.
There are ways to cut that profitability up and apply to other Social Media models, but it’s nice to have something that has such a clear value chain.
